You’ve taught your children to recognize their numbers, count, add, recognize money, basically, all the basics! So now what do you teach them?! And these days with the way we teach them to do math, I know sometimes it’s even hard to reinforce what they are learning in school. When I was a teacher I had so many parents tell me they really want to help their child but they just don’t understand the homework that comes home or the skills taught. But here’s the thing. The methods we teach may be different, but the numbers are still the same. Stick with teaching them the basics as you know them and it will help build a great foundation for what they are learning in school. Here is a series of math apps that you can use with your child to help them build their math skills. They are the Thinking Blocks apps and there are four of them.

They are Thinking Blocks Addition, Thinking Blocks Multiplication, Thinking Blocks Fractions, and Thinking Blocks Ratios. All four are free and depending on which app you use, are for different age ranges. The addition app is for ages 6-9, the multiplication one is for ages 7-10, and the fractions and ratios ones are for ages 10 and over.

All the apps teach children how to set up and solve word problems and helps them to organize the problem. This is great for students who learn best visually. What I love about it is that if they get a step wrong, it doesn’t let them move forward until they correct their mistake. Oftentimes with math, children see they got the wrong answer but have no idea where they went wrong. This will help shed some light on that. But the best part is that they can do it alone or with you to support them!
