How To Stay Active On Vacation

Ok, so I know what you’re thinking- vacation is supposed to be a time to relax, not workout! But here’s the thing, while I totally agree with relaxing and enjoying yourself on vacation, the more you let yourself go, the harder you are going to have to work when you get home to make up for all the progress you just undid. Most likely you did all that work so you could look good for your trip and feel comfortable in your bathing suit. Do you really want to ruin all that hard work before your trip even ends?
For some people, it’s easy to make the time for your regular workouts on vacation. I know for me, it depends on the type of vacation I am on as to whether or not I stick to my regular workout program. For our vacations at the Jersey Shore where the hotel gym is easily accessible (and free), and our time schedule is much more relaxed, I chose to go to the gym everyday with my DVDs (now I can stream my workouts from my phone) and press play. I did this while my family went to breakfast. Since I love to have my shake for breakfast, I wasn’t missing out on anything. Plus, it was something I did for myself on my vacation. No kids to take care of, just my time to relax and get in a good workout. Now for other trips like our honeymoon, I chose not to do my regular scheduled workout. When it comes to my diet and exercise I am imperfect just like everyone else, and I decided to spend all my time with my husband instead of going to the hotel gym or even working out in our room. HOWEVER, there are other ways to sneak in fitness on a vacation besides just doing your normal workout routine. Here are a few ways you can sneak in some activity while on vacation.
If you are going to a beach, there are plenty of ways to stay active there! Bring a frisbee, paddleball set, kite, football, baseball and glove, anything to keep you running around the beach! If you are a little more adventurous, rent a surfboard, a kayak, or even a paddleboard. If you are less adventurous, grab your headphones and head for a walk. The bonus side of all this activity is you will get a much more even tan than sitting in one spot all day!
The pool, whether it is indoors or outdoors, is another great way to sneak in some exercise. Besides just swimming, do some water aerobics. It is a great form of cardio and low impact, meaning it won’t hurt your joints. And if you have kids, I guarantee they will give you enough of a workout in the pool!
Only go out to eat at restaurants that are within walking distance to your hotel. Not only will this help you to burn off some of the calories you consumed, but it also saves money on gas, and saves you the annoying task of finding parking.
If you are somewhere where you will be going sightseeing, look into walking tours as opposed to a bus tour. If walking just won’t cut it for all you want to see, then see about renting bicycles. You can cover much more ground, it’s great exercise, and it’s much easier to park a bike than a car! Just don’t forget to bring your bike lock with you!
Here’s one of my favorite tips. If you are vacationing to an amusement park of any sort (Disney, perhaps?) or at the boardwalk for those of you who live on the East Coast like me, then chances are you will be doing lots of waiting in line! Spend your time wisely and get some calf raises in! Your legs will look great and I guarantee no one will ever notice! And even if they do, who cares?!
